The executive stood looking out the window before pressing the intercom to proceed.
3 minutes later, the door opened and a woman with a blush pink shirt, charcoal coat and tan leather belt cinched at the waist entered and shook her hand.
After pleasantries were exchanged both women sat.
“So, you want to be an intern is that correct?”
The woman with shining fingernails shook her head.
The executive frowned.
“If you don’t want to be an intern, then why are you here?
These interviews are for interns.
If you have no desire to be an intern then you’re wasting time.
Both yours and mine and neither of us need that.”
The woman in the blush pink shirt looked at the executive.
“I’m not wasting your time.
I’m here because I want to contribute.
I’m here because I like your style.
The executive behind the desk sat analysing the words, then picked up a spinning top and spun it free.
“You like my style you say…what do you mean when you say that?
Both women looked at each other, ignoring the top spinning silently on the surface.
“I mean I like what you have to say and I like the way in which you say it.
I find it different to everything else I see when I look around.
You look different.
You sound different.
Your business is different.
Your people are different.
That’s what I mean, when I say I like your style.
The spinning top on the desk wobbled and wavered, before coming to a complete halt.
The woman picked it up; twirling into her right palm before parking her elbow on the desk and dropping it again on to the gloss white surface.
“Tell me…..began the woman behind the desk.
“When you look at this spinning top…
.what is the first thing that comes to mind?”
The redhead looked at the rose gold piece of metal, then measured her words and spoke.
I think that when you are spinning,
timing is everything.
The woman behind the desk looked at the redhead seated before her.
“Tell me again” she said.
“Why are you here?”
“I have something I want to contribute.”
The woman looked at the spinning top and caught a glimmer of a reflection.
“Very well” she said.
