“Have you ever wanted to lose weight?”
The girl holding the grinder felt awkward and uncomfortable.
“Huh?” she asked
“A diet.” the man responded.
“Have you ever been on a diet?”
The girl with safety goggles looked at him with a bewildered look.
“Yes. I have…..
Not that it’s any of your business.” she replied.
The man looked unfazed.
“Listen here kid….. You need to get over yourself……. I don’t care about your weight or how you look, that’s not the reason I asked…… The reason I asked the question, is because I want to know the answer.
Tell me kid” he asked…
“Why did you go on a diet?”
The girl holding the grinder picked up her foot trying to kick the ground, however the steel caps on the boots were heavy and took her by surprise.
With her foot weighted down her mind ran into overdrive, leaving her with nothing to do other than respond.
“I went on a diet because I wanted to lose weight.
I was unhappy with the way my clothes didn’t fit properly.
I felt like I couldn’t do the things I wanted to do.”
The man nodded back at the girl.
“Great answer!” he said.
I want you to think of those things before you get to work.
Your job for this afternoon and for the next few months is to imagine you are putting this race car on a diet.
You want it to be able to do all the things it currently does, but you want it be able to do even more than that too.
You want to make sure it has all the parts needed for it to work properly to do it’s job.
It must be strong, and it must be fit…. but what it doesn’t need is excess weight holding it down.
When people go on a diet, they still need their arms and legs and mind and soul to work, and it’s going to be exactly the same with this car.
It needs to be lean and strong but doesn’t need excess fat crowding the good stuff.
So when you take that angle grinder to the car….. this is what I want you to imagine.
I want you to think of sculpting that car into a leaner and fitter version than it currently is, but with all the structural good stuff left in tack.
Do you understand?”
The girl lifted her boots to move again, didn’t get anywhere because of the weight and then nodded. “Yes….. Kind of.”
The man smiled.
“Good.” he said.
“Now. One more thing before you begin.
You’re going to need a couple of these.
I’ll give you one to start with, but there’s more in the toolbox. As you begin to cut dead weight from the car, things are going to get toxic. Click To Tweet
The googles will protect your eyes from flying debris, but something you can’t escape is the toxicity of the fumes from the metal you grind.
Use the mask to keep as much of the muck out as possible….
And one more thing…”
The man walked off and then came back.
“You’re going to need this as well….”
The girl looked at the funny looking box with headphones plugged into it.
“What’s that?” she asked
The man laughed. ” Are you serious kid…..
that is a walkman.
Have you never seen a walkman before?”
The girl took the square looking radio box from the man and looked and ran her fingers over the raised buttons.
“Is it music?” she asked
The man nodded.
“Yes. On a cassette tape…..have you not seen one of those before?”
The girl opened the walkman front cover and took out the cassette.
“No” she replied. “I haven’t seen a walkman before….and no… I don’t need to”….
“I’ve got music on my phone.”
The man shook his head.
You need to listen to the casette kid.
It’s a 30 minute run time.
That means one side will play for 15 minutes, then the other side will play for 15 minutes.
Each time the cassette stops you need to turn it over.
When that happens I want you to stop what you are doing and have a break.Grinding and cutting dead weight is toxic, exhausting, and deafening. You need to make sure your body and mind don't get caught in the crossfire of what you are doing. Click To Tweet
Play the tape kid. When it stops. Take a break. Have a look at your work. Get a drink. Go outside. Look at your theory in that book I gave you. Do something else other than cutting away what no longer serves you. Click To Tweet
Then after 5 or 6 minutes, come back to what you were doing, and do it all over again.
Your job for the next few weeks is to get used to working in 15 minute blocks of time, with a short break in between yeah?
You’re going to do that four times each day…… So 15 minutes work time, with a 5-6 minute rest time.
Once you’re done, you’re finished for the day and you can go home.
If you pitch in and do the hours required then on Saturday you can go to the track and see if the car feels any different with the weight you’ve taken out of it……sound fair?”
The girl nodded and pushed the cassette tape back in the player and then looked at the angle grinder she was holding.
“What do I do with it now?” she asked
The man laughed.
“Turn it on.
But don’t be scared.
Start with The Doors. You can’t go too wrong with The Doors…..it’s a perfect place to learn to wield that weapon of yours. You’ll be amazed at what The Doors can teach you without you even realising it”
The girl picked up the angle grinder, put the headphones on and flicked the switch~ getting ready to make the first cut to remove the dead weight from the doors.
