“It’s difficult to hear you.
Can you step forward please?”
The woman in the emerald green dress stepped forward.
Holding hands with the child standing next to her, she raised her gaze from the floor and then looked at the man firmly and spoke.
Because I can. That’s why.
And if I can.
And if you can.
And if I can….. and you can….. and they can……
Well then why wouldn’t we?
Why would we wait for someone to come in and save us, when we have the power to come together as a collective and save ourselves?
Why would we wait for our government to see what we already know.
That things are broken.
And they need to be fixed.
And so I ask you again.
And this time I tell you.
We do it because we can.
We do it because we know as one we are strong.
But together we are mighty.
We know as one~ we have life.
But together we have prosperity.
I think you…the government…. forget how you got there.
It was us.
We are the ones who put you there.
and the musicians….
we put you there with our emotion.
We the business owners,
the candlestick makers….
We put you there with our money.
the friends and the families….
We put you there with our power.
We the tradespeople,
the factory workers,
We put you there with our labour.
We put you there with our love.
And most of all?
We put you there because we could.
Today as I stand before you, presenting what we have built, and you ask me the reason why?
My reason to you is this:
We did it because we wanted to.
We wanted the people in our society to know.
We see you.
We love you.
We haven’t forgotten you.
We know you are there.
We are working on it.
It might not be perfect yet, but we are trying.
We are not giving up on you.
It’s going to be ok.
In unity with our global brothers and sisters….
We’ve got this.
