You’re really good at that.
Have you ever thought about charging money for what you do?
Or maybe starting your own business?”
The woman looked at her friend and put the scissors down.
She’d been cutting glitter to bring a child’s birthday outfit to life.
Starting a business was the last thing on her mind.
She moved the scissors into the middle of the table and looked at her friend as if she was crazy.
“Start my own business babe?
Are you crazy?
How on earth would I start my own business?
Have you seen my child this morning?
And after trying to get her dressed three times, I finally gave up and just let her go free.
Have you seen the way I look this morning?
I think you may need to sparkle me up before I start a business!”
The friend looked around the room and noted the naked child and exhausted woman.
“Ok….Yeah….maybe you don’t look too sparkled up with what you are wearing, but you do have a certain kind of sparkle about you!
I dunno babe….all I’m saying is you’re really good at making something out of nothing….I can tell that you’re passionate about what you do….and just thought I’d mention it…that’s all.”
The woman looked at her friend with kindness, taking in the view.
On the right sat an embroidery machine with child’s birthday shirt on it; whilst on a desk to the left sat a lenovo laptop with way too many tabs open.
The woman was correct, she was kind of sparkled up….
She had glitter sprinkled all over her and looked quite a sight!
She had glitter on her hands.
Glitter in her hair.
Glitter on the floor.
The woman with sparkle sat for a moment, looked at the naked child and had visions of getting out of the house and having a life outside of the kids.
Do you really think so?”
Her friend nodded and grinned.
“Heck yes!!!!! I couldn’t think of anyone better!! And if you need a partner in crime, I will always be here to catch you if you fall.
The woman looked at her friend.
The two women looked at each other and grinned wildly.
“Ok.” said the woman.
“Why not? Let’s give it a go!!!
What do you suggest?
Where would I begin?
The friend looked at the birthday outfits her friend was assembling.
“Maybe start where you are at?
Get some photo’s happening…
…..take some photos of your work or ask people you have already made stuff for if they have some….then upload them online and see if anyone is interested in what you’ve got to sell…I know that seems basic, but that’s all we do in business……We put together an MVP, chuck it out there and see if there is any interest in it…”
“But I don’t have any stock!!” protested the woman. “All I’ve got is the stuff I’ve made for naked child there and the stuff I’ve made previously….I’m nowhere near ready to put together a full collection of outfits worthy of selling to the public…”
The woman interrupted her friend.
“Babe…listen to me…do not invest time and money putting together an entire collection of outfits, until you first have validation from the market…yes?
First you want to make sure there is demand for what you are selling….
Don’t spend thousands of dollars purchasing fabric…sewing for months making a truckload of stock…investing in marketing etc… before you know if:
A: Anybody likes what you are selling
B: If they are prepared to pay for it….and not only pay for it, but if they will pay a fair price…yes?
The woman looked at her friend doubtful, but knew she was onto something.
The last thing she wanted was to spend large amounts of money only to find out nobody wanted to purchase what she had to sell things.
That makes sense.
So you think get some photo’s?
That seems like a good idea…..but I don’t even have a camera. All I have is my phone and it’s not really good enough to take if I am going to use these photos to sell.”
“A smart phone to begin with is fine!” said the friend.
“And is a great place to begin. If you are using your iphone and need help with tips and tricks, check this page here….and if you need some help with understanding how people use visuals in marketing; there’s a low cost pdf at The Change Room here...plus you can jump into the forum and ask questions if you get stuck…so there you go….no excuses needed!
Two things you can do to get started immediately.
- Take some photos of the products you currently have or ask previous people if they will share their pics of your work with you

The glitter covered woman looked at her friend.
“Hmmmm…..that doesn’t seem too hard….I think I could do that.
Take some photos, upload them and see if anybody is interested in what I’ve got to sell”
“Yes!!!” encouraged her friend
